Signs of Autism

Autism spectrum disorder can manifest itself in a variety of ways. Some adults and children without autism may exhibit some of the same behaviors and symptoms as people with autism.

Signs of autism in adults

  • Have problems with social interactions
  • Avoid making direct eye contact.
  • Nonverbal facial or body gestures, such as frowning or shrugging, are not understood. Changes in tone of voice, such as sarcasm, are not understood.
  • Insist on regularity and rules.
  • Changes in routine cause great distress.
  • Specialized diets are required.
  • Be reassured by rules and routine.
  • Changes in routines irritate you.
  • Be overly or underly sensitive to loud noises, strong odors, or tastes.
  • Never or only have limited verbal communication skills
  • Engage in repetitive behaviors such as pacing or flapping of the hands Have a limited range of interests
  • Have an excellent memory and recall of facts.
  • Rocking is an example of a repetitive habit.
  • Need help with daily activities like showering and dressing

 

Signs of autism in older children and teens

  • Being unable to comprehend what others are thinking or experiencing
  • Unable to express their feelings
  • Loving a strict daily schedule and becoming irritated if it is disrupted
  • Having a strong passion for various subjects or activities
  • becoming enraged if you ask them to do something
  • Finding it difficult to establish acquaintances or preferring to remain alone
  • They may not grasp expressions like "break a leg" because they take things literally.

 

Signs of autism in young children

  • Avoiding eye contact
  • Refusing to respond to their name
  • When you grin at them, they don't smile back
  • Flapping their hands, flicking their fingers, or rocking their bodies 
  • Not as energetic as other children
  • Using the same phrases over and over

 

It is important to note that not everyone with ASD exhibits all or any of the behaviors listed here as examples, and getting diagnosed can help you get any additional support you may require.
